Although we had been trying for a couple of months when she said the words "I'm pregnant" I still went into a state of panic, fear and overwhelming happiness. I was going to be a Dad.

Hiding the pregnancy when we went out was hard, I felt like I was the one getting all the morning sickness. Night after night of secretly drinking Polly's white wine as well as my own beer made for some shocking hangovers.

During the scan the little babies seemed to be quite active and happily bouncing around walls of my wife's uterus, completely oblivious to the emotional volcano they had just erupted on their parents...twins!

When the gynaecologist referred to my wife as the mother, "It's up to your wife, as the mother to...." I suddenly felt very young to be a father. I had only just got comfortable with calling her "wife" life was moving very fast.

Average age of fathers in Australia is 32.9 years.

The world's oldest recorded father is purported to be Australian mine worker, Les Colley, who was 92 years 10 months when he fathered a son, Oswald, in 1992. "I never thought she would get pregnant so easy, but she bloody well did," he told newspapers at the time, referring to his Fijian wife whom he'd met through a dating agency a year earlier.

The average number of disposable nappies that a child will wear up to the age of 2 1/2 years is 7,350

L’il Aussie Prems was created by Julia Toivonen in February 2007 who is mum to two premature babies, Ronan born at 27 weeks gestation in 2006 & Tristan born at 36 weeks in 2008 at Monash Medical Centre, VIC. Through her experience of giving birth so early to Ronan, a year after his 110 day long journey Julia decided to create an online community, L’il Aussie Prems to reach out to parents and offer support and understanding whether parents are still in the NICU/SCN or at home.  It has been a major learning curve creating and administrating a website but one Julia has thrived on. To date, the forum has a membership of over 1,200 members with a staggering 230,000 forum posts on support and advice from other families. The website is totally free for families to use.

Miracle Babies

http://www.miraclebabies.com.au/

Miracle Babies honours and celebrates the birth of babies who enter our world challenged by prematurity or sickness.

Our mission is to provide support to families throughout Australia during their journey through a Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU), the transition to home and onwards.

We provide emotional and practical support to families through hospital visits, newsletters, an online forum, playgroups, a 1300 phone number and an annual picnic. Miracle Babies can provide the structure and guidance for parents of miracle babies to set up their own support group in their local area.

Miracle Babies aims to raise community awareness and help educate people about the needs of these special newborns. The group works to raise funds for much needed equipment and resources for Newborn Intensive Care Units.

Miracle Babies originated through, and is closely aligned with, Liverpool Public Hospital in Sydney, earmarked to be the biggest hospital in the southern hemisphere. Founding members of Miracle Babies are all mothers who have experienced the birth of a premature or sick newborn. We understand the emotions of fear, love, guilt and elation and have learned to triumph over the challenges a premature or sick birth can bring.

We are here to share our strength and knowledge, to help families celebrate their own miracle babies.

Tommy's

0870 777 76 76

http://www.tommys.org/

Focus: Charity which funds scientific research ensuring more a babies are born healthy.
Location: UK
Description: Provide information on pregnancy health aimed at parents-to-be.

At Tommy’s we believe it is unacceptable that one in four women will lose a baby during pregnancy and birth.

When a pregnancy fails or a baby dies, the families affected can be devastated and often have a desperate need to know why. Frustrated at the lack of research that meant they could rarely answer this question, two obstetricians working in the maternity unit at St Thomas' Hospital in London were inspired to start fundraising for more research into pregnancy problems.

Soon, their cause was taken up by others and a charity affectionately known as 'Tommy's' (after St Thomas' Hospital) was born.

That was 1992. Today, we lead the way in maternal and fetal research in the UK. To give every baby the best chance of being born healthy, we work to fund medical research into the causes of premature birth, stillbirth and miscarriage.

We fund three research centres in the UK, including St Thomas' in London, St Mary’s in Manchester and the recently established Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh, which focus their research efforts on different issues relating to pregnancy.

We also feel it's important to raise awareness of the facts and to provide free, accurate and up-to-date information for medical professionals and parents-to-be.

This includes a dedicated telephone midwife service, a comprehensive website and free books and leaflets dedicated to promoting health in pregnancy and pre-pregnancy.

We are supported by people who want to do something about the lack of research and information around pregnancy issues like miscarriage, stillbirth and premature birth.

We believe every parent has the right to a healthy pregnancy and baby. Our target is to halve the number of babies that die during pregnancy or birth by 2030.
